THE ASK

THE ASK

THE ASK

After the acquisition of 2 video editing platforms, Quik, & Splice, Gopro found themselves in position where users needed to navigate to multiple applications to capture, edit, and share their videos. We were asked to create a solution that would allow the user to perform all the functions provided by the 3 existing solutions in a single application experience.

THE CHALLENGE

Create a scalable and simple interactive solution, which allows users to perform their desired task when engaging with their media. This includes automating highly manual processes such as, highlight and display engaging content, reframing how the application works, and encouraging the user to share content.

Our Customers

Partnering with our Consumer Insights team early, we were able to determine key details about users behavior and demographic. The user data showed a perception of edit being difficult, confusion when comparing their media against Gopros advertised content, and media not being utilized and stuck on SD cards.

Our Customers

Before our team was able to dive deep into what the app could become, we would create pillars that would provide a point of view for each type of interaction in the application. Access, Relive, Enhance, and Share. Each word strong enough to give to clarity on what the user was hoping to achieve, at any given moment.

Navigation

Utilizing the pillars, the team iterated through different variations of potential organizational structures. This uncover and define a ruleset for when certain elements in the main navigation would be available.

We provided 4 tabs camera, dashboard, media, settings. Viewing media animates the main navigation out of frame, and animate in the relative toolset available for that moment. The same thinking was then applied to Multiclip & Single Clip Editing.

Media

With media disbursed throughout the experience, having a single place for all media currently accessible would come in handy. We created a segmented menu that separate media in 3 categories, Camera, Phone, and Cloud. In the phone section, would could utilize the Quik engine to produce a automated video edit based on Date & Time.

One thing that was missing from the application was a suite of editing tools. Users were limited to a single tool: Trim. If they’d like to do any further modifications, they needed to download a different application. This is huge inconvenience in the user journey, users current perspective reflected that using tools like Premier & iMovie is difficult. And the time it would take unloading and filtering media on a traditional computer.

So, knowing we’d have the capability to string clips together with the Quik engine, we could use this opportunity the provided a updated toolset to users, as long as those tools were accessible in both multi-clip and single clip editing environments. Filter, Trim, Extract, Adjust, Stickers/Telemetry, Crop, & Speed were the first set of tools.

The backbone of Multiclip editing is ability to automatically find the best moments and sync them to beat of the music. This gave the user a better formed starting point for their edit. From there, they could easily swap between custom themes, songs, duration, and add/reorganize/remove clips.

A question would come frequently when designing, when you make an edit, are you modifying the original piece or copy? Each had ramifications. If you alter the original piece, the customer will no longer have access to that full video. If you make a copy, you potential taking up value space on the customer hard drive. After a video has been altered or saved, we’d provide a opportunity to the user to share to their friends or favorite Social Media platform.

Takaways

Launching this project was huge milestone for the team. It was a long process full of deep & informative conversations, tons of design iteration, rapid prototyping, and user testing. We learned a lot about how people interact and perceive their media and built a scalable design that allowed the future team to add more editing tools & expand into 360 video editing.
